Mountain Ponds
The vision of the English village pond helps fulfil a stereotypical view from a romantic bygone age. However beyond this quintessential impression and at times hidden from view, are naturally formed ponds. Some are small enough to be without a name, their natural level controlled by rain fall and evaporation. They can be referred to as tarns or corrie lochs that are formed in a cirque, which has been created by a glacier. These mountain ponds can be seen as a source of life in another wise empty landscape. Often they are walked past, ignored as insignificant in a walker’s objectives for the day. Their creation can however provide an opportunity to appreciate the continual cycle of nature’s work.
